Post Cards from the End of the World…

… is the name of the wine I am sipping while contemplating “Bay penetrating to the back”: the meaning of the aboriginal word “Ushuaia” from the native American “Yamanes”. Today, 55 000 Argentineans live in the capital of the province of “Tierra del fuego” (Land of Fire), principal port for observing penguins on the islands of South Atlantic and Antarctica (800 km from here)…

Located on the Southern point of America, Ushuaia has a special ambience... mountain tops covered of snow surrounding a small city of colored houses on the sea coast … it is a small paradise…

Especially for a desperate skier to glide on snow after three months of abstinence... this “Siberia of the South” is one of the only places on the planet where, in August, it is possible to ski in the wilderness at low altitude during the day...

and enjoy the urban life by night : shopping, restaurant dining and tango dancing!

After only three days of snow dancing, already the first contest was awaiting the Canadian-Brazilian couple on the first day of August. First the mental handicapped opened the ball, under the applauses of the public for their courage...

The goal is to circle the soccer stadium as fast as possible on 2 feet of snow (60 cm). Cross country skiers from 9 to 59 years old were stealing the show of this winter festival. For a rare occasion we had the reverse scenario: penguins in the distance were observing the strange behavior of human beings.

As the dance intensifies, the crowd grows. The local favorite is encouraged loudly. Frederico is fast... since the end of May he is training on snow. But is number is not perfect yet... « The Queen of samba on snow

and the « King of break-dance on skis » are faster...

Abraços del fin del Mundo…
